Why are annual chimney checkups important?

There are several factors that determine the safety and lifespan of your chimney. Are you familiar with them?

Pop Quiz: Why does the average masonry chimney in North State counties only last twenty-five years? If you guessed ‘water-damage’ then you are correct!

Another common hazard is creosote, which is the condensation left behind by tars and gases exiting the chimney when a fire is burning in the fireplace. It is a highly-flammable substance and can ignite at a temperature as low as two hundred degrees F, producing heat up to two thousand degrees F. This heat can cause wood framing around the chimney to ignite, despite the masonry between. Because creosote is produced when wood is not completely burned, creosote buildup can be an indication of an efficiency problem. For this reason, fire safety officials recommend having your chimney regularly inspected for productivity and cleaned of any creosote buildup. With professional installation and proper maintenance, your chimney can far exceed the average life-expectancy, warming your home for years to come.

What should I do?

Without these annual inspections, your chimney could be a hazard to your home and family. The good news is that, over the last fifteen years, chimney-related fires have been reduced by sixty percent nationwide due to proper chimney installation and professional maintenance. By educating others on the importance of annual chimney checkups and by having a certified chimney specialist from White Glove annually inspect your chimney, you can contribute to the continued reduction of chimney-related fires over the next fifteen years.

What We Do

With each visit to your home, we clean the entire chimney system and inspect for damage and proper installation. We also provide a written report, detailing our findings and recommendations for a safer, more productive system. Regardless of whether a home is tenant-occupied or not, it is our policy that all chimney-related problems are only discussed with the homeowner or their trustee. This policy does not take into account whether the tenant OR the homeowner is paying for the chimney services. If no one is home at the time of inspection, a report will be mailed to ensure that the homeowner is up-to-speed on our findings.

In addition to our extensive knowledge of chimneys, White Glove also thoroughly understands and services all brands and styles of wood stoves, regardless of installation type. Each service includes the removal of wood burning-inserts, and a thorough cleaning and inspection of the stove system. We also install clean-out doors, stainless flue liners and seals around the stove door.

Maintaining Your Wall Furnace

Wall furnaces typically need to be cleaned every few years. When you have your wall furnace serviced, a White Glove professional will disassemble, clean and inspect for damages or flaws. This includes a thorough cleaning of the flue and heat exchanger. You may also have your wall furnace checked by a PG&E technician when having your pilot light ignited. If you do not have your wall furnace regularly inspected, the system can become a dangerous source of carbon monoxide in your home.

We Also Remove Fireplace and Masonry Stains

Have a smoke and soot stained fireplace? In the past, these carbon buildup stains were very hard to remove without the use of harsh chemicals, a big mess and a lot of time-intensive work. Today, we use a product called ChimneySaver Paint “N” Peel Fireplace Cleaner, and now, with little mess and in a fraction of the time, your fireplace front, hearth and nearly any masonry surface can look new again.

Before having your chimney, fireplace or stove cleaned, you’ll want to have them inspected by trained professionals who can advise you of any issues and problems they discover. White Glove Chimney Sweeps can provide these chimney services and restore all of these appliances to safe operating condition.
