Chimney Relining

You shouldn’t determine your chimney safety by using a mirror, but you can use a mirror to figure out if you have a liner. If you don’t, it’s time to get one. The liner is essential to chimney safety, and no matter how long you’ve gone with a damaged or missing liner, it’s important to not go a day longer. Do not light a fire in a chimney that doesn’t have a liner.
The Flue Liner
Your flue liner is a barrier that protects you from your fire. It helps the fire to vent properly because it should be the exact diameter and height for optimum ventilation. It also protects the masonry from corrosive materials such as soot and creosote which coats the inside of the chimney system. Without the liner, the soot and creosote would coat and corrode the masonry over time. The smoke and heat from the fire would travel through the masonry and affect your home, exposing your family to carbon monoxide and other toxic fumes and allowing the structural materials to become heated and weaken over time.
If your chimney feels hot to the touch, your liner may be compromised and allowing the heat from the fire to travel through the masonry.
If you find pieces of clay tile in your fireplace, your liner is cracked and falling away.
If you have found animals inside your chimney system, your liner is likely scratched and damaged from the teeth and claws of intruding animals.
